Contextual Place Preference Apparatus

The Contextual Place Preference Apparatus is designed with two behavioral chambers separated by a manually operated guillotine door. Rather than having one center starting chamber isolated between the behavioral chambers with two guillotine doors, there are two starting boxes, on the front and back, located just outside the apparatus across both behavioral chambers. This provides a forced choice between the two behavioral chambers as well as a means to eliminate bias when introducing the subject for testing. The walls and floor of one chamber are white and the other black, providing contrasting visual cues. Both utilize ventilated and clear chamber lids which allow client-supplied lighting to illuminate the chambers and help balance the baseline preference.

The apparatus is fabricated of black, white and clear polycarbonate plastic and is assembled via glued construction. The result is a strong and durable device with a smooth finish that is easily cleaned to remove olfactory cues. The floors of the chambers are also adaptable to client supplied tactile finishes.

Automated monitoring is handled by photocell sensor arrays mounted to the front and back of the Contextual Place Preference Apparatus. Each side of the apparatus is monitored by 8 infrared photobeams spaced 1 inch (2.54cm) apart. Features of the Windows application program help automate the procedure for training and testing of subjects. The use of "Automatic Start" and "Staggered Start" allow the user to dose the subject and immediately place them in the apparatus. Data collection for that apparatus begins immediately upon detection of the subject. Likewise, data collection can automatically stop after a fixed number of user specified intervals. The Opto-Max system can monitor and record subject activity during all phases of the experiment. Zones, defined for each chamber of the apparatus, can provide the time spent in each as well as the distance traveled along the long axis.
